Golf is a game of chance and coincidence that can greatly influence even the most skilled players. This week, at the U.S. Open held at the Pinehurst Resort & Country Club’s No. 2 course, both good and bad breaks will play a significant role in the players’ performances. From the native areas off the fairways to the bounces on the greens, luck will be a deciding factor.
Interestingly, chance also played a key role in the creation of the course itself by the renowned architect Donald Ross. In 1899, while working at the Royal Dornoch Golf Club in Scotland, Ross decided to move to America after hearing about the rapidly growing popularity of golf in the United States. A coin toss with a friend determined who would make the journey across the Atlantic, with Ross emerging as the winner.
Upon his arrival in Boston, Ross began working at a local golf course near James Tufts, the founder of the Pinehurst Resort & Country Club. This opportunity eventually led to Ross’s love affair with the sandy North Carolina terrain, reminiscent of his homeland in Dornoch.
Throughout his career, Ross designed around 400 golf courses across the United States, solidifying his reputation as one of the most prominent course architects. His courses have hosted numerous championships, with 175 U.S.G.A. competitions held on Ross designs, more than any other architect.
Among Ross’s many remarkable courses, Pinehurst No. 2 stands out as one of his finest creations. It is often considered his masterpiece, drawing praise from golf enthusiasts and experts alike.
The unique soil composition of Pinehurst, ideal for golf course construction, captivated Ross and influenced his decision to focus on the area. His house adjacent to Pinehurst No. 2 became his design laboratory, where he experimented with course features and layouts.
While Pinehurst boasts several Ross-designed courses, including No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5, No. 2 remains the most revered among golf aficionados. Ross’s meticulous attention to detail and innovative course design set Pinehurst apart as a golfing destination.
This week’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst will showcase the legacy of Donald Ross and the enduring appeal of his masterpiece. As players navigate the challenges of Pinehurst No. 2, they will experience the intersection of skill and chance that defines the essence of the game.
