When David De Clercq traveled to San Francisco last year, he had a few musts on his itinerary: Go to Alcatraz, try new restaurants, and ride in a self-driving car.
Self-driving cars, also known as autonomous vehicles or colloquially as robotaxis, have been navigating San Francisco’s streets since 2009 and operating commercially since last August. These cars are now becoming one of the city’s latest tourist attractions.
Mr. De Clercq, 42, who divides his time between New Jersey and Sardinia, where he owns restaurants, bars, and villas, is an enthusiastic traveler.
“I love exploring and trying new things,” he said. “I knew that I definitely wanted to experience a ride while I was in town.”
What, where, and how to ride
Conversations are buzzing on Reddit and Twitter, with visitors seeking advice on how to secure a ride in a self-driving car while in San Francisco or be well positioned to spot one on the go.
Some basics are necessary when planning your own robotaxi ride. Currently, Waymo, owned by Alphabet, is the only company offering public rides in San Francisco.
To ride with Waymo, you can download their app and request a ride. Popular pickup and drop-off locations include tourist spots like the Ferry Building, Pier 39, Coit Tower, and the Japantown Peace Plaza.
A futuristic attraction
If you can’t get direct access in time, consider asking friends, family, or colleagues to invite you on a ride. Waymo vehicles are all-electric Jaguar I-PACEs equipped with advanced technology for a safe and comfortable ride.
Mr. Karsh, a tech marketing executive, describes riding in a Waymo as a unique tourist experience, showcasing San Francisco’s futuristic side.
Waymo rides can attract attention from passersby, turning the vehicle into a sight to see in itself.
From awe and delight to near normalcy
Despite initial awe, many riders quickly adapt to the self-driving experience and find it becoming the new norm.
Following this trend, technological advancements like self-driving cars are on the rise, promising a glimpse into the future of transportation.
