Major League Baseball kicked off Players’ Weekend on Friday, a unique annual celebration where players showcase their individuality through custom gear that reflects different aspects of their lives.
Initiated in 2017, this year’s Players’ Weekend has a specific theme for each day. Friday is all about highlighting players’ hobbies and interests, while Saturday shifts the focus to charities and community efforts that are close to players’ hearts. Sunday is dedicated to honoring the people who have supported players on their journey to the big leagues.
The weekend culminates with Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN, featuring the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers playing in the “Little League Classic” in Williamsport, Penn., at 7:10 p.m. ET.
While much of the excitement is yet to unfold on the field and social media, we have a sneak peek of what’s in store, thanks to Major League Baseball:
1. Tarik Skubal of the Tigers, known as “Skoob,” will be sporting spikes with Scooby Doo on them during Players’ Weekend. The Tigers will also be selling a “Skubal Snack Burger” designed by him, featuring bacon, pepper jack cheese, light mayo, and a fried egg.
2. Willy Adames of the Milwaukee Brewers has customized bats for each theme day, showcasing his love for the ocean and support for the Players for the Planet charity. Look out for his blue bat with a sea turtle and recycle logo.
3. The Cincinnati Reds are set to sport cleats designed by patients at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital over the weekend. These unique shoes will later be auctioned on Reds.com, with the proceeds benefiting Cincinnati Children’s.
4. The “Phillies Daycare” phenomenon from 2022 continues, with players like Alec Bohm, Brandon Marsh, and Bryson Stott embracing the playful moniker.
5. Ernie Clement of the Toronto Blue Jays is bringing a unique touch to Players’ Weekend with a bat that resembles a pencil. A playful nod to the written word!
