Welcome to the San Diego Wave Hotel in Panama City, where Landon Donovan, the former U.S. men’s national team forward, has taken on the role of interim head coach for the team. Donovan recently addressed reporters here for the first time since assuming his new position and expressed his excitement about the challenge ahead.

Donovan mentioned that coaching women’s professional soccer presents a new and “steep” learning curve for him, but he is eager to embrace it. He wakes up every day, fueled by excitement, even if it means sacrificing sleep. The resources and support from Wave ownership have contributed to his enthusiasm and determination to lead the team to success.

Landon Donovan named San Diego Wave interim coach

The Wave is gearing up for their first CONCACAF W Champions Cup match against Santa Fe FC. Donovan recognizes the importance of both stabilizing the team and implementing his ideas while keeping an eye on the bigger picture of the NWSL playoffs. He has already engaged with team leaders and plans to connect with individual players to build strong relationships.

Donovan’s connection to the Wave runs deep, stemming from previous interactions with Wave leadership and a shared vision of building a successful team. His coaching philosophy emphasizes compassion and personal growth beyond just soccer skills, drawing from his own experiences as a player.

How Donovan Got the Wave Job

Donovan’s strong relationship with Wave president Jill Ellis played a pivotal role in him landing the interim coaching position. Ellis sought out Donovan’s input on coaching candidates, eventually leading to Donovan’s decision to take on the challenge. Their discussions centered around creating a unified club culture and instilling confidence in the players.

Despite being new to women’s professional soccer, Donovan’s approach prioritizes empathy and personal connection with players. He aims to guide young talents like Melanie Barcenas and Kimmi Ascanio not only in their soccer development but also in their overall growth as individuals.

Donovan’s Commitment to the Wave

Donovan’s dedication to the Wave goes beyond a temporary position. While he acknowledges the possibility of a permanent role, his focus remains on the present and helping the team succeed. Donovan’s coaching journey reflects his passion for San Diego and working with like-minded individuals.

As Donovan leads the Wave into the upcoming challenges, his genuine care for the players and the team’s success shines through. His coaching philosophy rooted in compassion and personal connection sets the tone for a new chapter in women’s professional soccer.
