Tennis sensation Jannik Sinner has been embroiled in a controversy after testing positive for a banned substance not once, but twice. Despite an independent tribunal ruling that Sinner bore no fault or negligence for the violations, the repercussions have been severe. He has been stripped of his ranking points, prize money, and results from the prestigious BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells earlier this year.
The substance in question was clostebol, a banned anabolic steroid, detected during an in-competition test at the tournament and later in an out-of-competition test. While the amounts found were minuscule, they still triggered provisional suspensions and a thorough investigation by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).
After a lengthy investigation overseen by Sport Resolutions, it was determined that Sinner’s physiotherapist unknowingly brought the substance to Indian Wells in a healing spray. The physiotherapist used the spray on Sinner, causing inadvertent contamination and ultimately leading to the positive tests.
Despite admitting to the violations, Sinner has been allowed to continue playing, with the ITIA acknowledging his cooperation throughout the process. It was also noted that the trace amounts of clostebol found are unlikely to have had any significant performance-enhancing effects.
Notably, other Italian tennis players have faced similar issues in the past, with mandatory suspensions following positive tests for clostebol. However, Sinner’s case has garnered more attention due to his high-profile status in the sport.
It’s worth noting that clostebol is considered a weak steroid compared to others, and its presence in various over-the-counter products adds to the complexity of anti-doping measures in sports. Sinner’s lawyer emphasized that the athlete did not intentionally take the substance and attributed the positive tests to the mistakes of his support team.
