The tennis world was rocked this week when the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced sanctions against men’s world No. 1 Jannik Sinner for testing positive twice for clostebol, an anabolic steroid and banned substance. Despite this, an independent tribunal found no fault or negligence on Sinner’s part.
Sinner lost ranking points, prize money, and results from the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, where the positive tests occurred in March. Despite being provisionally suspended after each test, Sinner successfully appealed both times and was allowed to continue playing.
“I am fully committed to complying with the ITIA’s anti-doping program,” Sinner stated in response to the ruling.
While following the Tennis Anti-Doping Program regulations, many of Sinner’s peers expressed outrage at the disparity in treatment. Canadian Denis Shapovalov, in particular, questioned the inconsistency in how players are handled in anti-doping cases.
France’s Lucas Pouille echoed this sentiment, questioning the fairness of the process. Nick Kyrgios and Tennys Sandgren also voiced their opinions on the matter, highlighting the frustration among players.
The case draws parallels to Tara Moore’s experience, where she faced her own anti-doping suspension that was later overturned due to contaminated meat being the source of the positive test. Moore criticized the perceived bias in the system toward top players.
