College football is just getting started, with many teams having played only one game so far. However, Florida State is off to a rough start, sitting at 0-2 after losses to unranked opponents. The team, ranked No. 10 at the beginning of the season, has struggled despite a significant investment in their defensive line.
Florida State poured almost $2 million into their starting front, part of a larger NIL team budget of around $12 million. This substantial investment has yet to pay off, as the team suffered a humiliating loss to Boston College at home, getting outrushed 263 to 21 yards.
In stark contrast, the Noles enjoyed a dominant 2023 season, going 13-0 in the ACC but ultimately missing out on the Playoff. Since then, their fortunes have taken a turn for the worse.
Things went from bad to worse as Georgia handed the Noles a crushing 63-3 defeat, taking advantage of a depleted FSU team with multiple players opting out of the Orange Bowl. Despite Coach Mike Norvell’s efforts to replenish the roster through transfers, the results have been disappointing this year.

One bright spot for FSU was the addition of former Clemson and Oregon State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, although his performance has been underwhelming. The defense, a strength in previous seasons, has been a significant liability, giving up big plays in both games.
FSU’s run defense ranks near the bottom nationally, allowing 227 yards per game on the ground. The lack of pass rush has also been concerning, with the team recording only three sacks in two games despite a strong showing in 2023.
Both offense and defense are struggling, with the team ranking poorly in key statistical categories such as third-down conversions and red zone efficiency. Coach Norvell has a lot to address during the upcoming break before their next game against Memphis.
