Memphis Tigers basketball has seen better days. Penny Hardaway, the beloved Memphian and NBA legend, has been at the helm for six seasons, but the program’s on-court performance doesn’t quite match its off-court turmoil. Recent headlines have been more about scandal than success, with staff dismissals and NCAA violations looming large.
While Hardaway has brought star power to the program, his coaching record leaves something to be desired. With only two NCAA Tournament bids and one win in six seasons, it may be time for a change. The next coach won’t have the same star appeal as Hardaway, but they could bring stability and integrity back to the program.

Memphis submits letter alleging potential violations to NCAA
The program has a storied history, but recent scandals have tarnished its reputation. Academic improprieties and eligibility questions have plagued the team since Hardaway took over from Tubby Smith. It’s time for a fresh start, one that prioritizes the student-athlete experience and upholds the values of college athletics.
The allegations in the anonymous letter point to a pattern of misconduct within the program. From academic violations to improper payments, the issues are mounting. Hardaway’s contract may run through 2027-28, but perhaps it’s time for a new era in Memphis basketball.
As the program looks to rebuild, it’s clear that a change is needed. The Tennessee administration successfully navigated a coaching change in football, and Memphis could take a page from their playbook. It’s time to put the scandals behind them and focus on building a winning culture that honors the legacy of Memphis basketball.
