Exciting news for Texas Longhorns fans as the team prepares for their upcoming game against Louisiana-Monroe this weekend. Starting quarterback Quinn Ewers is facing a questionable status after suffering a strained oblique in the last game against UTSA. Coach Steve Sarkisian shared the latest update on Ewers’ condition during a press conference on Monday.
Despite Ewers’ injury, the team can take comfort in knowing that redshirt freshman Arch Manning stepped up to the plate during the last game. Manning delivered an impressive performance with four touchdown passes and a touchdown run, showcasing his potential as a starting quarterback if Ewers is unable to play this weekend.
Ewers had been on a hot streak before his injury, displaying remarkable accuracy with a career-high 73.4 percent completion rate this season. He had thrown for 691 yards, eight touchdowns, and only two interceptions, making him a strong contender for the Heisman Trophy according to BetMGM. However, his status for the upcoming game is uncertain.
Coach Sarkisian described Ewers’ injury as non-contact and revealed that Ewers felt the pain while attempting a crucial pass during the last game. Despite trying to push through it, Ewers eventually had to leave the game for further evaluation.
If Ewers is unable to play, it will mark the third consecutive season that he has missed a game due to injury. Nevertheless, Sarkisian expressed confidence in Ewers’ resilience and commitment to recovery, ensuring that he will be ready to return to the field at full strength.
As for Manning, his performance against UTSA impressed Sarkisian with his composure and decision-making on the field. Although there were some learning opportunities, Manning showed promise as a potential starter for the team.
With Ewers’ status up in the air, Sarkisian mentioned that the team will adjust practice reps accordingly for Manning and true freshman Trey Owens, who debuted in the last game and will serve as Manning’s backup if needed.
