The NFL has seen significant progress, with a record 15 Black starting quarterbacks in the 2024 season’s Week 1.
This milestone marks a stark contrast to the past when Warren Moon opted for the CFL and Tony Dungy was shifted to a defensive back in the NFL. The league’s evolution reached a landmark in 2001 when Michael Vick, the first Black quarterback, was drafted first overall by the Atlanta Falcons.
To shed light on the journey of Black quarterbacks, a three-part docuseries titled “Evolution of the Black Quarterback” premiered on Amazon Prime Video, hosted by Vick. The series features legends like James “Shack” Harris and Doug Williams, along with current stars like Patrick Mahomes and Dak Prescott.
Vick’s inspiration for the docuseries came from his wife and director Anthony Smith. The series delves into the challenges faced by Black quarterbacks and the progress made in the NFL over the years.
Progress is more than a journey. It’s a revolution.

The docuseries also highlights the impact of individuals like Charlie Ward, the 1993 Heisman Trophy winner, who excelled as a quarterback because of a coach who tailored the system to his strengths.
Black quarterbacks have faced biases, as seen in comments about Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson, but progress is evident with nearly half the league now starting Black quarterbacks.
Vick’s journey, including his time in prison and return to the NFL, is a focal point of the series. His experiences with adversity and success serve as inspiration for the next generation of Black quarterbacks.
