President Biden’s campaign is set to launch a powerful new advertisement on Monday that directly addresses and criticizes former President Donald J. Trump’s abortion policy, placing blame on him for the demise of Roe v. Wade. An official from the campaign revealed that the ad will be part of their $50 million July ad push and will be broadcast on digital TV in key battleground states.
During his 2016 campaign, Trump promised to appoint anti-abortion justices to the Supreme Court in an effort to overturn Roe v. Wade. When the court’s Dobbs v. Jackson ruling in 2022 effectively ended the right to abortion, Trump proudly took credit for the outcome.
The ad, titled “Her Own,” features a quote from Trump during a recent presidential debate where he expressed his satisfaction with the overturning of Roe. The narrator in the ad poses a critical question to viewers, asking them to consider who they want in the White House – a president proud of ending Roe v. Wade or a leader fighting for women’s rights.
Social conservatives have long advocated for stricter abortion laws nationwide, but such measures have not been popular among voters in recent years. Trump has attempted to approach the issue cautiously, suggesting that individual states should have control over abortion rights instead of implementing a blanket ban.
The ad aims to address Biden’s perceived weakness on abortion by highlighting his commitment to restoring Roe v. Wade if re-elected. The campaign has been using various platforms to emphasize the contrast between Biden’s stance on reproductive rights and Trump’s conservative agenda.
With a focus on the potential consequences of a second Trump term, the campaign warns of significant restrictions on liberties and reproductive healthcare under Project 2025, a policy proposal endorsed by Trump allies. Biden’s campaign stresses the importance of their role in protecting women’s reproductive rights from Trump’s proposed restrictions.
Biden campaign spokeswoman Lauren Hitt issued a statement cautioning against the dire implications of a Trump re-election, including harsh penalties for women seeking abortions and a nationwide ban on the procedure. She emphasized that Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris stand as a barrier against Trump’s “cruel attacks on reproductive healthcare.”
