Caitlin Clark, the top pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, recently made a bold political statement by liking Taylor Swift’s Instagram post endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for president. While Clark did not publicly endorse Harris herself, she explained to reporters that she saw it as an opportunity to use her platform to encourage others to register to vote.
At just 22 years old, Clark emphasized the importance of being informed about candidates and their policies before casting a vote. She urged others to educate themselves and make informed decisions when it comes to politics.
Although Clark has mostly focused on basketball during her rookie season with the Indiana Fever, she has spoken out against the use of her name to push agendas of racism and misogyny, stating that all women in the league deserve respect.
This isn’t the first time WNBA players have used their platforms to make political statements. In 2020, players like Diana Taurasi wore T-shirts in support of Democratic senate candidate Raphael Warnock, highlighting the league’s commitment to social justice issues like racism and police brutality.
Swift’s post, which had over 10 million likes as of Thursday, garnered attention from high-profile figures like Oprah Winfrey and WNBA champion Sue Bird. Clark, the leading rookie scorer in the league, is among those who showed their support for Harris through social media.
