Being a college football referee may seem like a daunting task, but do you have what it takes to step into their shoes? Let’s dive into the challenging world of officiating and put your knowledge to the test.
Fans often direct their frustration towards officials, especially when a call is questionable or missed. However, the majority of the time, referees make the right calls unnoticed. The pressure they face to make split-second decisions is immense.
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a Mountain West/Conference USA officiating clinic led by former Big 12 referee Mike Defee. The clinic focused on rulebook standards, new regulations, training techniques, and game logistics. As part of the clinic, officials were given a multiple-choice quiz to test their knowledge of in-game situations.
According to Defee, the test is designed to ensure referees have a solid understanding of the rulebook. Failure to pass the exam means no schedule for the upcoming season. Crew head referees are expected to score higher, with a passing grade set at 70 percent.
Even I, a self-proclaimed football enthusiast, was humbled by the quiz, scoring only 48 percent. The original quiz comprised of 27 questions, but we’ve simplified it to 15 for you to try your hand at. Are you up for the challenge of becoming a college football official?

So, give the quiz a shot and see if you have what it takes to make the tough calls on the field. Who knows, you might discover a hidden talent for officiating!
