Condemning Racism: Indiana Fever Rookie Caitlin Clark and Head Coach Christie Sides Speak Out
INDIANAPOLIS – Following the close of the Indiana Fever’s season, rookie Caitlin Clark and head coach Christie Sides took a stand against the racist rhetoric that many WNBA players have faced this season.
During a news conference on Friday, Clark expressed her disappointment, stating, “Nobody in our league should be facing any sort of racism, hurtful, disrespectful, or hateful comments and threats. Those aren’t fans. Those are trolls, and it’s a disservice to the people in our league, the organization, and the WNBA as a whole.”
The online harassment of WNBA players has escalated during the postseason. Following the elimination of the Fever by the Connecticut Sun, Sun veteran Alyssa Thomas called out the “Indiana Fever fan base” for directing hateful comments towards her and her team. Additionally, Sun guard DiJonai Carrington shared an email containing threatening and racist language she received from an anonymous source.
“I think in my 11-year career, I’ve never experienced the racial comments like those from the Indiana Fever fan base,” Thomas stated. “It’s unacceptable, and there’s no place for it. We don’t want fans that are going to degrade us and call us racial names.”
Sides emphasized the need for the Fever to address their fans, while also calling on the WNBA to do more to protect its players. Sun coach Stephanie White highlighted the toxicity players face, reflecting on broader societal issues such as racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia.
The WNBA released a statement condemning hateful comments towards players, asserting a zero-tolerance policy against racism, derogatory remarks, or threats. White urged the media not to amplify online trolls and negative narratives.
Despite the challenges, Clark remains positive about the WNBA, championing the league’s exceptional athletes and positive storylines. She emphasized the importance of uplifting the league in a positive light.
General manager Lin Dunn praised Clark for her resilience amid adversity, noting the young star’s ability to shine despite facing scrutiny and negativity. Clark’s impact on the league has been profound, bringing in record viewership and attendance.
