Former two-time Super Bowl-winning coach, Jimmy Johnson, didn’t hold back in his criticism of Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper during a recent appearance on Fox Sports. Johnson, who led the Dallas Cowboys to back-to-back championships in 1992 and 1993, had a strong message for Tepper.
According to Johnson, the major issue with the Panthers lies with Tepper himself, who is making crucial decisions without listening to his football personnel. Johnson highlighted Tepper’s role in key decisions such as wanting Bryce Young as the No. 1 pick and the departure of significant players and coaches, including Christian McCaffrey, D.J. Moore, Brian Burns, and several others.
Tepper acquired the Panthers from Jerry Richardson in May of 2018 for a whopping $2.2 billion. However, the franchise’s value has since surged to $5.9 billion in 2024, ranking them 25th in the NFL. Despite this, the team has struggled on the field, with the worst record in the league since the start of the 2018 season.
The discussion on Fox Sports also delved into the Panthers’ current quarterback situation, with Bryce Young being benched after a disappointing start to the season. This move led to Andy Dalton being named as the starter for the upcoming game against the Raiders in Las Vegas.
GO DEEPER
Is Bryce Young’s benching the beginning of the end for last year’s No. 1 pick?
Andy Dalton’s last start for the Panthers came in Week 3 of last season against the Seattle Seahawks, where he put up impressive numbers despite the team’s loss. As the Panthers continue to navigate through challenges on and off the field, all eyes will be on Tepper and his decision-making going forward.
