The Future of Tua Tagovailoa: Calls for Retirement Amid Concussion Concerns
Just minutes after Tua Tagovailoa suffered his latest concussion on Thursday, former NFL players took to social media and national broadcasts to call for the Miami Dolphins quarterback to step away from football. This latest concussion comes less than two years after Tagovailoa endured numerous head injuries in the 2022 season, leading to significant time off the field. After that season, he mentioned that retirement was on his mind.
Following the recurrence of Tagovailoa’s concussion on Thursday, a wave of former and current NFL players suggested that now may be the time for him to consider walking away from the game.
As the Dolphins suffered a 31-10 defeat to the Buffalo Bills, Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe and former Dallas Cowboys star Dez Bryant both voiced their concerns, with Sharpe saying, “Really hope Tua is okay, but he’s gotta seriously think about shutting it down. His concussions are getting worse and worse, and he’s a young man with his entire life ahead of him.”
Speaking to reporters after the game, Dolphins backup quarterback Skylar Thompson expressed his feelings, stating, “It makes me sick…You care about the person more than the player, and everybody in our organization would say the same thing. So just really praying for Tua and hopefully everything will come out alright.”
Former All-Pro offensive lineman Mitchell Schwartz also weighed in, mentioning that he personally believes Tagovailoa should consider retiring due to the nature of his recurring injuries.
Similarly, calls for Tagovailoa to retire didn’t just come from former players, with free agent safety Adrian Amos and current players like Tony Gonzalez and Richard Sherman expressing their concerns about Tagovailoa’s future in football.
