Revisiting the Glory Days: Former High School Football Players Reflect on Coach Tim Walz’s Rise to National Politics

Imagine you’re going about your regular day, and suddenly your phone lights up with a call from Paris. This was the reality for Seth Greenwald, a former linebacker from Mankato West High School in southern Minnesota, whose team clinched a state championship 25 years ago.

When the call turned out to be a request for an interview about his former coach, Tim Walz, who was recently selected as the running mate for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential campaign, Greenwald couldn’t help but chuckle. Little did he know that this would be just the beginning of a flood of media attention reaching out to the members of the 1999 Class 4A title-winning Mankato West Scarlets.

From TMZ to CNN, these former players found themselves back in the spotlight, reminiscing about the days when Walz was not a political figure but a dedicated assistant football coach who taught history. The camaraderie and nostalgia brought on by Walz’s newfound prominence have reconnected old teammates and reignited memories of their time under his mentorship on and off the field.

“It feels like we’re the ’72 Dolphins or something,” said Eric Stenzel, reflecting on the unique bond formed through their shared experiences.

Before his political career took off, Walz’s journey began in the Midwest, teaching and coaching at Alliance High School in Nebraska before moving to Mankato with his wife, Gwen. His impact on the Mankato West football program was transformative, turning a struggling team into one inspired by his infectious enthusiasm and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Walz’s coaching style was characterized by his motivational speeches, intense practices, and a relentless drive to instill a winning mentality in his players. Former teammates vividly recall his animated demeanor, the dusty locker room film sessions, and the memorable rituals that brought the team together.

Walz’s coaching philosophy extended beyond the field, shaping young athletes into disciplined players who valued hard work and dedication. His emphasis on fundamentals, game preparation, and strategic adjustments laid the foundation for success and fostered a culture of excellence among his team.

As Coach Walz transitioned from the gridiron to the political arena, his former players looked on with a mix of surprise and pride. The man who once motivated them with fiery pregame speeches was now addressing thousands at political rallies, showcasing the same passion and conviction that defined his coaching tenure.

“You never see those things coming, so it’s certainly surprising,” remarked one player. “But at the same time, people who connect with people tend to continue to move up and be recognized as somebody who people want to work with.”

Coach Walz’s legacy lives on not only through his political achievements but also through the lasting impact he had on generations of student-athletes who were shaped by his leadership, mentorship, and unwavering belief in their potential.
