Unveiling the Rise of Justin Verlander: From College to the Hall of Fame
Richard and Kathy Verlander made a deal with their son that if he earned a college scholarship, he would receive a sports car. As a result, in 2002, a young and ambitious Justin Verlander from Goochland, Va., cruised onto the campus of Old Dominion University in a sleek black Mustang.
Several months earlier, the Pittsburgh Pirates contemplated selecting Justin Verlander in the MLB draft. However, the Verlanders set a hefty $500,000 price tag to sway him away from a collegiate commitment. Pittsburgh chose to pass, and over the course of 49 rounds and 1,481 picks, 29 other clubs did the same. A bout of strep throat dampened Verlander’s fastball at the start of his senior high school season, deterring scouts and elite college programs from pursuing him.
Yet, Old Dominion saw the potential in Verlander and became his college home. Despite his exceptional talent, Verlander’s decision to join a struggling team like Old Dominion raised eyebrows. However, he believed he would be the ninth player from the university to make it to the majors.
Upon arriving on campus in his black Mustang with a license plate declaring “JV BRINGING IT 94,” Verlander exuded confidence that some initially found off-putting. Nevertheless, he lived up to his bravado by showcasing his remarkable talent on the field.
Fast forward to today, Justin Verlander, the ageless ace of the Houston Astros, epitomizes a career that blossomed in college. His journey began at Old Dominion, in a small ballpark called The Bud, nestled beside the Elizabeth River in Norfolk, Va.
Though many doubted his choice of college, Verlander’s stellar performances at Old Dominion validated his decision. His collegiate career paved the way for a future marked by greatness and a possible spot in the Hall of Fame.
Those who witnessed Verlander’s collegiate years recall them as witnessing the formative stages of a future baseball legend. Despite his cocky demeanor, Verlander earned respect through his unwavering work ethic and dedication to his craft.
Dozens of scouts flocked to Verlander’s debut at Old Dominion to witness his talent in action. Despite facing bouts of skepticism and challenges along the way, Verlander’s resilience and determination propelled him to achieve greatness.
As he embarked on his sophomore year, Verlander faced formidable opponents and showcased his prowess on the field. His journey from an unassuming freshman in a college bullpen to a dominant force on the mound captured the imagination of many.
Verlander’s college years were marked by not just his exceptional talent but also his quirky personality and unique antics. His teammates fondly remember the camaraderie and bond forged in the “baseball house” where they lived and shared unforgettable experiences.
Today, Justin Verlander stands as a testament to hard work, dedication, and the enduring spirit of chasing dreams. From the hallways of Old Dominion to the bright lights of the major leagues, Verlander’s journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes everywhere.
