The NFL recently implemented significant changes to its kickoff rules in March, aiming to increase the number of kickoff returns while reducing the risk of injuries. So far, the preseason results suggest that the number of kickoff returns could see a substantial rise in the upcoming season.

During a recent media briefing on health and safety, the NFL disclosed that the kickoff return rate in the preseason is currently around 78 percent – a significant increase from the mere 21.8 percent seen during the 2023 regular season. This uptick in kickoff returns is likely due to teams refining their strategies and providing more opportunities for special teams players to showcase their skills.

While it’s still early to determine the impact on player injuries, the NFL chief medical officer, Dr. Allen Sills, mentioned that there haven’t been any notable changes in injury rates or types in the first two weeks of the preseason. However, the average kickoff return distance has increased to 25 yards from 23 yards last season, with 39 returns of 30 yards or more already recorded in the preseason – hinting at more explosive plays to come.

NFL executive vice president Jeff Miller highlighted that the teams’ average starting field position post-kickoff has also improved, with teams now starting at their own 28.1-yard line compared to 25.2 yards last season. The lower touchback rate in the preseason, currently at 19 percent compared to 73 percent in the previous regular season, raises questions about whether teams will aim to avoid explosive returns by opting for touchbacks.

As the NFL continues to monitor the impact of the new kickoff rules, there’s a possibility of adjustments before the regular season commences. While rule changes mid-season are rare, the league hasn’t ruled out the possibility of tweaking the rules as needed.

It will be interesting to see how these changes affect the game as the regular season unfolds. Stay tuned for more updates on the NFL kickoff rules and their impact on gameplay. Let the excitement of the new season begin!
