Former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, who was the last Republican to drop out of the primary race against former President Donald J. Trump, made a significant announcement on Tuesday. She revealed that she was releasing her 97 delegates and encouraging them to support Mr. Trump.
In a statement, Ms. Haley emphasized the importance of Republican unity during the nominating convention. She expressed concerns about Joe Biden’s competence for a second term and labeled Kamala Harris as a potential disaster for America.
Ms. Haley stressed the need for a president who would hold enemies accountable, secure borders, reduce debt, and revitalize the economy. She urged her delegates to rally behind Donald Trump at the upcoming national convention in Milwaukee.
The decision, reported by Politico, underscores the Republican Party’s aim for cohesion as they kick off their convention on July 15. Despite a strained relationship towards the end of her campaign, Ms. Haley has affirmed her support for Mr. Trump in the November elections.
Even after withdrawing from the race, Nikki Haley continued to attract notable percentages of independents, Republicans, and moderate Democrats in primary contests. Her convention delegates include representatives from Washington, D.C., and Vermont, where she secured victories.
When asked about her attendance at the party’s convention, Ms. Haley’s spokeswoman, Chaney Denton, mentioned that she had not received an invitation.
“She was not invited, and she’s fine with that,” stated Ms. Denton. “Trump deserves the convention he wants. She has made it clear that she is voting for him and wishes him the best.”
