Santa Fe Handcycling Expedition: A Long-Distance Journey
SHARE

The excitement was contagious as a throng of cyclists clad in vibrant Lycra gear gathered at the Santa Fe Railyard in New Mexico. The air was charged with anticipation as we prepared to embark on the 50-mile Half-Century ride through this picturesque region, known for its art scene and cultural charm. As we set off, a convoy of police officers on motorcycles escorted us through the streets, marking the beginning of our adventure.

Our route took us past iconic landmarks like the Roundhouse and Museum Hill, each offering a glimpse into the rich heritage of the area. Leaving the city behind, we pedaled into the open countryside, surrounded by rolling ranch lands and sweeping vistas.

This was the second day of a popular biking event that draws over 1,500 participants annually to explore the high-desert landscapes and cultural treasures of Santa Fe. Amongst the sea of cyclists embarking on the Half-Century journey, I stood out as the sole participant on a handcycle.

Handcycles offer a unique way to navigate the terrain, allowing riders to pedal using their arms instead of legs. Equipped with an electric assist motor, my handcycle enabled me to keep up with my fellow riders despite my physical limitations.

Rediscovering Freedom through Handcycling

Following a life-altering rock climbing accident that left me paralyzed, cycling became a source of solace and liberation. Through handcycling, I found a way to embrace the thrill and independence that had been missing from my life post-injury.

Pushing Boundaries on the Half-Century Ride

Embarking on a challenging course that traversed various terrains, from flat stretches to steep inclines, I was determined to push through the physical demands of the ride. With each mile, my arms bore the brunt of the effort, propelling me forward with unwavering resolve.

As the journey unfolded, I encountered picturesque landscapes and historical sites, weaving through a tapestry of cultural treasures that defined the essence of Santa Fe. The windmill-dotted highways and quaint villages painted a vivid backdrop for our cycling odyssey.

Handcycling: Empowerment through Motion

For individuals recovering from spinal cord injuries, handcycling serves as a powerful form of therapy and a symbol of resilience. Organizations like Craig Hospital offer rehabilitative programs that harness the transformative potential of adaptive sports like handcycling, enabling individuals to reclaim their sense of freedom and mobility.

Celebrating Achievement

Crossing the finish line, I felt a surge of emotions – elation, exhaustion, and pride. Despite the physical exertion and the dwindling battery life, completing the arduous ride was a testament to my perseverance and determination. As I received my finisher’s medal, I relished the sense of accomplishment that comes with conquering a challenging feat.
