Texas Hurricanes: A Quick History

The tension-filled moments leading up to Beryl’s imminent arrival seem all too familiar to the resilient residents of the Texas coast who have weathered countless storms over the years.

Beryl, a tropical storm on track to hit the Texas shore, is poised to become the latest addition to the state’s history of hurricanes.

Various hurricanes have made significant impacts on Texas, with fluctuating death tolls depending on reporting sources and criteria for determining storm-related fatalities.

Hurricane Harvey (2017)

In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Rockport, Texas as a formidable Category 4 storm, marking the strongest hurricane to hit the state since Hurricane Carla in 1961.

Harvey brought destructive tornadoes and severe flooding to Harris County, causing rivers to swell to historic levels and engulfing roads and structures in muddy waters.

With at least 68 reported deaths in Texas alone, the aftermath of Harvey left a significant impact on the state.

Hurricane Ike (2008)

Ike initially intensified to a Category 4 hurricane before making landfall in Texas as a Category 2 storm in 2008, generating a substantial storm surge along the Galveston shores.

The storm resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 28 individuals, as reported by the Weather Service, although other sources like the Texas General Land Office cite a higher toll of 74.

Hurricane Rita (2005)

Hurricane Rita struck the coasts of Texas and Louisiana as a Category 3 hurricane in 2005, reaching Category 5 intensity over the Gulf of Mexico.
