The WNBA is bringing its 15th franchise to Portland, marking an exciting expansion for the league.
The team, set to debut in 2026, will be owned by Lisa Bhathal Merage and Alex Bhathal, who also own the NWSL’s Portland Thorns. The Bhathal family has deep ties to the NBA, with Raj Bhathal serving as the principal co-owner of the Sacramento Kings. This new team in Portland will play its home games at the Moda Center in downtown Portland, alongside the NBA’s Trail Blazers.
“We believe in the transformative power of women’s sports and are thrilled that the W will call Portland home,” said Lisa Bhathal Merage. “Our goal is to grow this organization in partnership with the Portland community and support the best women’s basketball players in the world.”

Portland had a previous WNBA team, the Fire, from 2000 to 2002, owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. After a few seasons, the team folded due to financial struggles despite having a loyal fan base.
Following considerations for the league’s 14th franchise, which went to Toronto, Portland remained a strong candidate. The Bhathals’ connection to the NBA gave them an edge in securing the team for Portland.
In a statement, WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert expressed excitement about the league’s return to Portland, calling it “another important step forward.”
In conclusion, Portland is in for an exciting journey with the WNBA as it prepares to welcome its 15th franchise. The Bhathal family’s ownership brings a wealth of experience, and fans can look forward to world-class women’s basketball at the Moda Center in 2026 and beyond.
