John Sterling Rumored to Come Out of Retirement to Call Yankees Postseason

Exciting news for New York Yankees fans! Sources have revealed that legendary announcer John Sterling may make a comeback to call the team’s postseason games. Sterling, who retired earlier this season after an illustrious 36-year career, is reportedly in talks with WFAN, the Yankees, and Audacy New York president Chris Oliviero about returning to the booth.

In April, Sterling bid farewell to the broadcasting booth, and a new trio of commentators took over. However, he recently made a brief return to join analyst Suzyn Waldman in calling a few innings, sparking rumors of a possible comeback for the playoffs.

If Sterling does decide to return for the playoffs, he may need to commit to calling both home and away games. Travel was a factor in his initial retirement but has since become more manageable due to the playoff schedule. There is also talk of Sterling calling a few regular-season games before the postseason begins.

Regardless of his decision for October, Sterling is expected to retire permanently after the season. The Yankees and WFAN are already considering potential replacements for the booth, including Rickie Ricardo, Justin Shackil, and Emmanuel Berbari, as well as exploring a national search for new talent.

WFAN and the Yankees recently had Craig Carton from FS1’s “Breakfast Ball” co-host call some games, generating positive feedback. While Carton may not be a full-time candidate, there is a possibility of him returning in the future. However, his current commitments prevent him from joining this season’s broadcast lineup.
